The Concierge – Chapter Thirty Four

“Its no problem at all,” says Juan to Anna as he hands her her key to her car. She could not believe it when he had called her to tell her that her car was ready, he offered to drive it to her but she insisted that she take a cab to come collect it. “Wow, you even washed it!” she exclaims as she looks at the car her eyes gliding over the shiny vehicle.”Aah yes, I thought that I might as well since I had the time,” lies Juan. The truth was he didn’t have the time; in fact he didn’t even have the time to fix the car as quickly as he did. But somehow he did it by taking time from his week end and off day to fix it and wash it as well, there was something about Anna, something that drew him to her.
“So how much is the bill?” asks Ana as she reaches into her handbag for her purse”………..the bill?” repeats Juan, almost as if he does not understand what the word means. Ana looks at him, brushes a strand of hair off her face and smiles,” yes, at least that is what I think they call it – the bill no? the payment for fixing the car” she adds. “Aaah yes, yes, the bill” answers Juan,” its 800 dollars”. Ana looks at him surprised, “are you sure?” she says. “I had asked around and a few of my friends told me it would cost at least 1000,”she adds, looking at Juan with disbelief.
The work, including the overtime charges did cost well past a thousand dollars, but looking at Ana, Juan could tell that she wasn’t someone who could easily afford to pay a thousand dollars for a car that she seemed to desperately need.
Somehow, someway he mastered up the courage to say the next line that came out of his mouth,” if you feel its not enough you could always buy me a cup of coffee sometime,” he says and finishes with a smile. Ana could feel her eyes well up, ever since she came into the country, she had rarely seen kindness from a man without an ulterior motive, and she could tell by the look on Juan’s face and his kind gesture that it was genuine kindness that he was showing her. She quickly dabs the corner of her eyes, smiling she says,”im so sorry, its just that I’ve been having such a rough week and the car breaking down was the last straw ….and you showing me this kindness, I know you didn’t have to finish the car so quickly, believe it or not even though I’m a woman and we don’t know that much about cars, I could tell by the amount of work you had in the garage that my car would at least take a week.”
And then without giving it a second thought she hugs Juan. Taken aback by the embrace Juan reciprocates the hug, at this moment, this hug seemed to be exactly what they both needed to make them feel better about the obstacles they were experiencing in their lives. She releases her body from Juans and smiles, a little embarrassed at her uncontrollable action,”im sorry I just didn’t know how to show you how much I appreciate it. I really need the car to get around for work,” At the mention of work Juan remembered the bag he had seen in Ana’s car,” maybe we can talk about your work over coffee then?…” he asks. Ana hesitates a little before she answers uneasily,” yes , ofcourse.”

The next morning as Sonya is making her way to the shop where she works; she can’t help but wonder what was going on with Brandon. He had disappeared all week end and even after he called to let her know he was all right, he was still preoccupied, in fact he sounded as if whatever was preoccupying him, was also making him angry. She thought back to that text message she caught a glimpse of off his phone – could the person who sent him that text be the one who had kept him away from her this weekend, what has this person done to anger Brandon, worse yet – what had Brandon done to make that person send him such a nasty text message.

“I dont care what you are doing – i need to see you!” Brandon says angrily into his mobile phone.” I am pretty damn sure, you can get away for a bit- dammit i said i want to see you babe and if you really love me, you are gonna do whatever it takes to slip out of work to come and see me- I’ll be waiting for you,” with that he hangs up the telephone, he looks over at Tyrone who nods back.
